Doubling up Mark and Gillian Smith have radically extended and updated a detached 1960s brick bungalow by adding two more floors and integrating home automation from Create Automation (createautomation.co.uk) to remotely control their heating, lighting, audio and other household systems. “The bungalow was fairly substantial, but quite dated, with all the accommodation on one level,” explains Mark. “We planned to take off the main roof to build up, but we kept the smaller leg of the L-shape as a single storey, and moved into rented accommodation with our children during the build.” A structural engineer confirmed that the existing foundations required no reinforcement, but lightweight concrete blocks were chosen to reduce the load of the new walls, and the weight of the roof slates was also calculated during the design…
