Councils assigned new mandatory housing targets The government recently announced updates to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), giving councils across England mandatory targets for new homes. The revisions to the NPPF form part of the government’s goal of delivering 1.5 million new homes by 2029 and state that 370,000 new properties must be built each year, mainly in high-demand and grey belt areas. Localities with the most unaffordable housing, but the greatest potential for development, have been assigned the highest housebuilding targets. For example, St Albans City & District Council must construct 1,660 new homes each year, while Warrington Borough Council is expected to create 1,064 new properties. Councils must also revise their local plans accordingly and prioritise land with “lower environmental value”. To assist authorities with the task,…
