When it comes to semi-detached homes, building an extension may be limited by the proximity of other houses and the position of windows, but these UK homeowners have found innovative ways to add space with style

Towering success Rachel Payne has extended her Victorian semi with a timber-clad extension that includes an unusual space-saving tower — creating a double-height kitchen and a series of openings between three levels. “The layout was previously very higgledy-piggledy, and I wanted the living areas to feel more open plan,” says Rachel. “Paul Archer Design (www.paularcherdesign.co.uk) came up with the idea of extending the kitchen outwards as well as upwards, with a series of openings between floor levels and a better connection to the garden. The house is in a conservation area, so a planning application was needed, and the planners liked the unusual modern design.” The tower was inspired by historic fishing net storage sheds at Hastings, which are tall and thin to save space.
