When HMS Dreadnought entered service in 1906, it was the fastest and most powerful battleship in the world. Its propulsion, armament and fire control systems were so revolutionary that a new class of warship was soon named after it, with all battleships that came before simply labelled ‘Pre-Dreadnought’.
