Historiador y periodista, Marian Turski nació en 1926 en Druskiennikai (entonces Polonia, hoy Lituania) como Moshe Turbowicz. Tras la invasión alemana de Polonia en 1939, Marian, sus padres y su hermano menor fueron trasladados a la fuerza al gueto de Lódz en 1940. En el recinto asistió a la escuela de secundaria, donde se unió a un grupo de jóvenes izquierdistas. En agosto de 1944, su familia fue deportada al centro de exterminio de Auschwitz. Allí, su padre y, muy probablemente, su hermano murieron en las cámaras de gas poco después de llegar.
