Produced by Chris Kimsey [The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton], Misplaced Childhood was recorded between March and May 1985 at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, Germany, just 150 metres from the then-still-standing Berlin Wall. Kimsey had been recruited by David Munns, head of A&R at EMI at the time, and he met the band during the album’s early writing sessions. ‘We were quite excited, because here was the guy who had done The Stones’, Fish recalls. ‘Before that, we had worked with Nick [Tauber], and now we felt we had gone up a division’. The band were also less than satisfied with how their previous album on EMI, 1984’s Fugazi, was mixed and mastered. The recording process was efficient. ‘There were no extraneous overdubs – everything we recorded was used’, Kimsey recalls.…
