Gillian Welch & David Rawlings Woodland CD Acony Records WHEN GILLIAN WELCH released her debut album Revival in 1996, we filed her sparse, roots-based music under the tag ‘alt-country’. It was always a misleading term for her acoustic-based songs were traditional rather than alternative and certainly had nothing to do with the over produced, schmaltzy, ten-gallon hatted country music coming off the Nashville production line. Instead, Welch drew on a timeless well of folkloric music from what the critic Greil Marcus once famously called: “the old weird America”, located deep in the rustic, isolated communities of places like the Appalachians, where time passes slowly and tumbleweeds rather than technology seem to rule the back-porch way of life.
