GROUP TESTS ARE often hard to rank, because everyone’s buying priorities are different. So, this ordering is weighted towards sound quality, with power and feature count being second and third priorities. In sixth place is the Synthesis Roma 96DC+, which some may prefer to all the others here. It has a particularly sweet and friendly midband that makes listening to music a pleasure. Yet it’s down on power compared with the group, which in turn makes it sound weaker than most – especially at higher volumes with inefficient speakers. The Cyrus i9-XR is a wee bit better-sounding than the NAD with most music.
