It is a sad fact that the number of people living with dementia is continuing to rise. Some new research published in The Lancet Public Health indicates that dementia incidence started to increase in England and Wales after 2008. The research suggests that this figure could now be as high as 1.7 million. Not only is the ageing population a major driver of this trend, but the number of people developing dementia within older age groups is also increasing. Given this fact, scientists are looking for more ways to prevent or delay the onset of dementia and it appears that playing a musical instrument is one approach worth exploring.
