Don’t call it a comeback… the Solo is back after almost a decade, but it faces stiffer competition in 2024

Even before Apple’s AirPods conquered the world, the on-ear Dr Dre-endorsed Beats Solo was perhaps the first headphone to make its mark as a high-street fashion statement. Apple’s takeover of Beats in 2014 meant that the Solo took a back seat for a few years, but it made a comeback this summer in the shape of the Solo 4. Available in a variety of colours, it gets off to a good start with a £50 price cut, but it’s now up against much stronger competition. At first glance, the Solo 4 doesn’t look hugely different from its trendsetting predecessors.
