Nigel Williamson loses himself in a fascinating new book about the history and influence of music from all around the world

Legendary producer Joe Boyd first told me he was writing a book about world music when we were listening to a recital by some Indian musicians in a delightful perfumed garden one sun-dappled afternoon at a festival in Jodhpur in 2007. At the time he had just published White Bicycles – Making Music In The 1960s, a cracking insider’s tale of making records with the likes of Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake and The Incredible String Band to name but a few. The prospect of a second book that would take the story on to his adventures in world music recording albums by the likes of Toumani Diabate, Cubanismo and Kanda Bongo Man was enticing.
