Elipson W35 Xi £700

Our sole single-enclosure contender has plenty of pop, but can it deliver the stereo goods with panache?

If you want compact and understated, System Audio is crisply across the brief with its SB1 overleaf. If, on the other hand, conspicuously dark and dramatic is more tempting, then Elipson’s spherical and black W35 Xi may well snag your attention – more so if it’s sitting on the optional, slim-legged tripod stand (£150). The sci-fi aesthetic, I must admit, is a good one, though Elipson might justifiably point out the shape helps eliminate internal standing waves, too. Evolved from the original W35 and W35+ (HFC 498) wireless multi-room speakers, Elipson is promising further improved sound quality and new streaming and connectivity features for the Xi – just as well if it stands a chance of shining in this company of twin enclosure stereo protagonists.
