HAS HI-FI REINVENTED itself? Tricky. It’s all a matter of perspective. If you’re a die-hard, purist audiophile endlessly floating in a steady state universe where a turntable, amplifier and pair of speakers will do very nicely thank you, nothing much has changed. And come what may regarding the next big thing, that will likely always be the case. Those less concerned about being swept along by the expanding, technology-led convenience/convergence zeitgeist, though, might well be riding the perfect wave where pure sonic excellence matches and – whisper it – even exceeds that of the classic, lovingly curated passive separates system with all its audiophile affirming cables and clutter. A reinvention? Maybe we’re heading for a revolution. Right now, the jury’s out, but the on-going march of active/wireless speakers is undeniable…
