It was meant a budget 17-tonner, to appeal to those who wanted a cheap lorry, but the Turkish built ERF EP6 won few friends. Pip Dunn briefly looks back at its short history.
BACK TO BASICS
ERF had for so long developed some fantastic trucks, but it often struggled at the lucrative 16/17 tonne sector. Its M series of the 1970s used the same cab as the B, and later C, series and the E series did likewise – the same cab shared at 17 tonnes as well as top weight tractors. This meant the trucks had a tendency to be heavier and more expensive than the market wanted, especially those using these trucks on day work only and not necessarily going such long distances that driver comfort – achieved by a bigger cab – was always necessary. In the late 1980s, it did a deal with Austrian manufacturer Steyr to take its cab that it had successfully used for its 13- and 17-tonne trucks and…
