Marketers call them “line extensions.” It’s when a popular sports drink gives birth to 25 new flavors — many with names that aren’t really flavors (Riotously Refreshing Red!). Or when a fast-food taco morphs into 13 different configurations (Try our new Bacon Omelet Taco in a Waffle Shell!). Chrysler pulled a line extension out of its bag of tricks for 1962, when it axed the Windsor and replaced it with the 300. The 300 Letter Series, since their 1955 debut, had been made up of exclusive sport-luxury cars with two doors, the most powerful engines in the stable, and full complements of luxury features. But for ’62, a 300 line described as the “Sports Series” was offered in not only a coupe and convertible, but in a four-door hardtop, too. Buyers didn’t…
