We interrupt this Chevrolet truck issue to bring you an engine that disrupted the diesel light truck business at the end of the 1980s — the 5.9 Cummins. At the time, Dodge was a distant third behind GM and Ford and badly needed a boost. It got one, for 1989, in the form of a powerful diesel inline-six. This engine was part of the “B series” (sixes and fours) designed jointly by Cummins and Case for commercial, industrial, and agricultural applications. By heavy-duty diesel engine standards, the “12-valve” (two valves per cylinder) 5.9 wasn’t revolutionary, but by dropping the engine in light trucks, Dodge yanked the rug out from under the competition.
