Keeley Hawes on why playing Jane Austen’s sister –who destroyed the author’s letters – is a dream come true

As the star of some of Britain’s best-loved TV series, Keeley Hawes – of Line of Duty, Bodyguard and The Durrells fame – is no doubt overwhelmed by tempting offers when it comes to picking a new project. But, she says, she “totally lucked out” when the script for brand-new BBC period drama Miss Austen arrived in her inbox. “I had been hoping for something like this,” says the actress, 49, ahead of a screening of the four-part series. “I was interested in doing something about love, and this is a story about love in all its forms.” Based on author Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel – and perfectly timed to mark this year’s 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, one of the most celebrated writers in British history…
