Many in our family have caught big-game fish in Hawai‘i. As our grandchildren Hunter and Hayden Nottage grew older, they began to fish with their dad and uncle. When Hunter did a science fair project, Hunter’s mom, April, asked if Grandma and Grandpa could help. We provided Hunter with some available information about mercury in fish. For starters, mercury is a natural product of the earth’s crust. Mercury comes in different forms, as explained on the website : some forms are used in dentistry; and others, like methyl mercury, are extremely toxic. Volcanic activity that is prevalent in Hawai‘i is one way that mercury enters the atmosphere.
