SPRING DREAMING Garden centres will be chocka with spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths and freesias. Or choose from the massive selection offered online by specialist bulb retailers. Plant bulbs into free-draining soil at twice the depth of the height of the bulb, or pack them tightly into pots so they’re almost touching but not quite. If possible, select firm bulbs that are free from mould. GO FRUITY Autumn is a good time to plant fruit trees as they have time to establish their roots before they produce new growth in spring. Before choosing a fruit tree, check to see whether it is self-fertile or whether it needs a pollination partner, which is the same type of fruit species but a different variety.
