For more than a century now, fashion has drawn heavily from military sources to craft its own essentials. Be it the bomber jacket, pea coat or aviator sunglasses, these uniform codes have gained prominence in our closets not simply because they are associated with displays of power, but because they were invented with practical considerations in mind. The trench coat, that ubiquitous all-weather piece made famous by Thomas Burberry, is as versatile for warfare as it is for urban slickers. For spring it turned up on the runways with several new tricks up its sleeves: Taking on an exaggerated ’80s shoulder at Balenciaga, tweaked into a cape hybrid at Valentino and worn with a frothy gown at Dior.
