AS MUCH AS HE WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER, Jacques Henri Lartigue was a student of people. His body of work spanned decades, from the candid black-and-white pictures of the French Belle Époque he took as a child to the colorful images he created in the 1960s and 1970s, which brimmed with a kind of joyful representation of life. Lartigue, who was born outside Paris in 1894, always took photographs and made paintings, but it wasn’t until 1963, at the age of 69, that he was fully embraced by the art world. John Szarkowski, then head of the photography department at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, arranged a show of Lartigue’s images.
