AS AN ARTIST, Judy Chicago has always made the idea of having a voice—and empowering others to use their own—central to her work. In the early 1970s, she established what is often considered the first university program in the U.S. dedicated to feminist art, at Fresno State, and she later helped create the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles, a studio and exhibition space for female artists. But Chicago’s ethos was most vividly captured in her best-known work, The Dinner Party (1979), an installation celebrating the achievements of 1,038 women throughout history, each of whom Chicago granted—both literally and figuratively—a seat at the table.
