THE WAY WE RECKON with the past can say a lot about how we see ourselves in the present. When we have warm memories of other times, the temptation sometimes is to try to relive them. Histories that are more difficult, marred by pain and even trauma, can have a way of freezing us in another moment as we process how those experiences have changed us or search for ways to live with them or move past them. There are also memories we cling to or confront, the vestiges of things that linger in the air and our hearts and minds.
