IN THE 1960S, DIANE ARBUS became known for her photographs of people who existed on the fringes of society—some who were marginalized because of who they were or how they looked, others who stood apart by choice or out of necessity. But in her work during that period for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar, she was often commissioned to shoot individuals at the center of it: the dancer Rudolf Nureyev, a pre–Rosemary’s Baby Mia Farrow, even an infant Anderson Cooper. (His mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, was a friend.)
