On FINDING JOY

We talk a lot about fashion as armor, how what we wear can help gird us to face the world. That is one of fashion’s great powers. But it can also offer an escape. When I was growing up, my brother disappeared into his comic books, and I got lost in the fantasy of fashion magazines. That is fashion’s other superpower: the invitation to dream, to be transported, to delight. It is that kind of joy—and where we find it—that is the theme of this issue. I remember the first time I met Gisele Bündchen, when I styled her for a photo shoot years ago. She was then as she is now: very much at ease. It’s an infectious quality.
