On ART and ARTISTS

I love planning our annual Art issue. It is our honor to shine a light on the artists who color our world. Sometimes they are at the white-hot center of the art scene (Amy Sherald, Lauren Halsey, Theaster Gates), sometimes they are titans (Betye Saar, Jasper Johns, and the late Faith Ringgold), and often they are those we feel have not received the recognition they so deserve. Our editor at large, Stephen Mooallem, brought Barbara Chase-Riboud’s work to my attention. The sculptor, poet, and novelist first appeared in the pages of this magazine in a 1972 article titled “The Riboud Family: Collective Individualists.” That story focused more on Chase-Riboud’s renowned photojournalist husband, Marc Riboud. It wasn’t until the end of the article that the writer addressed Chase-Riboud’s work on its own…
