THE CONCEPT of performance has always played an important role in fashion, from the way collections are presented to how we all dress as we prepare to meet the world. It has also played a pivotal role in the history of Harper’s Bazaar. Peter Lindbergh’s April 1993 fashion story featuring model Kristen McMenamy elegantly paid tribute to that legacy, inspired by larger-than-life Russian art patron Sergei Diaghilev’s influential early-20th century dance company, the Ballets Russes.
