On PERFORMANCE

I remember the first time I saw Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform. I had just moved to New York City, and I saw Judith Jamison star in Revelations. It was one of those experiences; I knew I had just witnessed something transformative. I was at another show recently where someone in the audience spoke about keeping their palms and heart open during a performance—all the better to take in what the dancers are putting out. And let me tell you, whatever Ms. Jamison was transmitting that day, I got it. Message received. PERFORMANCE HAS THE POWER to do this: to make us feel things viscerally, to transform us.
