Using Old West-style firearms to hunt can prove to be a real challenge

There was no helicopter to swoop in on them. There were no high-capacity, semi-automatic rifles. There were no night-vision scopes. Actually, there were no scopes whatsoever. I was invited to hunt hogs on the Rancho Concepcion, the roughly 300-acre spread in the middle of Texas Hill Country owned by Mike Harvey, head of Cimarron Firearms. I was confronted by several challenges for this particular hunt. I was hunting in unfamiliar terrain using borrowed firearms. And those firearms, while excellent, were late 19th Century Old West designs that featured standard iron sights. Then, of course, there were the hogs themselves that always seemed to have a game plan for complicating things. I’m used to hunting difficult terrain.
