PUT your thinking cap on. It’s 1882, and you are moving your entire family and belongings west across the Oregon Trail. You must contend with buffalo, grizzly bears, the occasional moose and a bunch of locals who are not riding the welcome wagon. If you’re lucky, you have an 1876 Winchester in .45-75 or .50-95 Express. You would need to be lucky and wealthy because you would need to stockpile your own ammunition. These were proprietary, specialorder cartridges from Winchester and not readily available in the Western lands. You are more likely to have one of the readily available Sharps, Remington rolling blocks or Springfield trapdoors in .45-70. Or you might have had an 1881 Marlin chambered in .45-70.
