at the time of writing, famed artist Henry Matisse is front of mind as there is an exhibition of his colourful interior designs for the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence at the Art Gallery of NSW. Matisse described the chapel on the French Riviera as his “masterpiece”. While writing about colour is like trying to describe ice-cream, it is colour that makes seemingly simple interiors so magnificent. Now more than ever, colour is being used to create calm space as opposed to bright, bold-impact colour statements. Recently I’ve been working with leading colour forecaster Marylou Cafaro. 01/HOUSE Mystery Bay Blades LOCATION Mystery Bay, New South Wales With the majestic rise of Mount Gulaga as a backdrop, this home was never going to be ordinary. Built by homeowner Rob Hawkins, this modern abode pays homage to its natural surroundings at every turn. “The site and Mother Gulaga were our main inspiration for the design,” says Rob, with each room given an uninterrupted view of the mountain through floor-to-ceiling windows. The expansive home has three distinct areas that can be sealed off when not in use, something that was important to the couple who mostly live there alone. 01/HOUSE Bondi House LOCATION Bondi, New South Wales On a site of just 153sqm, an expert team managed to engineer a house of 212sqm, with, according to the architect, the ground floor acting as a “plinth” for the levels above. Built on a naturalistic site with views of the Bondi valley and flanked by a forest of paperbark trees, this dilapidated, inter-war, semi-detached house featured a dark interior, significant damp issues and an uninspiring floorplan before its owners decided to upgrade it. “[They] wanted a house that was filled with light and one that would fit contextually into a very tight site,” notes architect Conrad Johnston. Oyster Bay House is a labour of love for its owners, who spent 10 years designing, developing and building this property. 01/HOUSE Central Mood House LOCATION Footscray, Victoria This classic, double-fronted heritage abode has had a sophisticated upgrade featuring moody, textural tones and loads of natural light. With a brief to restore this once drab heritage home to its former glory, the owners also chose to open it up, creating access to natural sunlight and connecting it to the landscape. 01/HOUSE 10 Fold House LOCATION Abbotsford, Victoria Looking to retain the original footprint and architectural history of the home while creating a modern, light-filled interior was all that the homeowners of 10 Fold were hoping for. Maintaining the heritage of the home through the original brickwork, an earthy, modern interior palette was created using organic elements such as Tasmanian oak, natural stone and terrazzo in the flooring. Compiling all these layers resulted in a cosy and contemporary home of Edwardian-era heritage. Federal House balances light and dark tones in its exterior façade and interior palette. The central courtyard is a one-of-a-kind organic central cooling system comprised of a subterranean pool and planted fern void.
