Vendredi 7 mai 1999. La première séance d’essais du Grand Prix d’Espagne, troisième de la saison, bascule dans sa seconde moitié. Mick Doohan, le quadruple champion du monde 500, occupe la deuxième place du classement provisoire derrière Kenny Roberts Junior, vainqueur en Malaisie et au Japon. L’Australien se dit confiant, ayant reçu des évolutions sur sa 500 NSR. En cette fraîche matinée andalouse, la piste porte encore quelques traces d’humidité liées aux pluies nocturnes. Après avoir franchi la ligne d’arrivée, l’Australien place sa Honda dans le premier virage du circuit de Jerez. C’est un droit au rayon constant dont le freinage se fait en montée, avant d’accélérer jusqu’au très sec deuxième virage, un 180° en descente.
