These days, chooks are credited with being much smarter than previously thought and owners who spend time with their flock soon realise the birds have definite likes and dislikes. Hens can be quite passionate about aspects of their life, egg lay being a major one. And a nest to lay in is a top priority. How do we know this? Extensive research undertaken with hens showed they were prepared to go through all manner of challenges to secure a nest. We need to acknowledge this primal instinct and ensure we provide spacious, inviting nests. The process of egg lay is associated with a number of activities stimulated by hormonal changes.
