If you’ve never discovered the joy of figs, it’s likely you’ve never eaten a freshly picked, perfectly ripe fig plucked straight from the tree. Obviously, the best way to encounter a fabulously ripe fig is to plant your own fig tree. The fig is a small subtropical tree whose age-old native range is the Mediterranean. It’s relatively hardy and drought tolerant once established but a lack of water will impact fruit production. Fig trees are ideal for many Aussie gardens. They can be grown in the ground if you’ve got the room or, if space is limited, in large pots or even espaliered along a fence or trellis.
