COOL & TEMPERATE VEGIES • Spring! The days are getting warmer but the ground may still be cool and there’s still a chance of frost. Don’t start mulching yet — let new plantings get the most from the early-spring sun. • Speaking of new plantings, crops to consider include artichokes (globe and Jerusalem), cabbage, capsicum, chilli, cucumber, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnips, peas, silverbeet, swedes, turnips and herbs. • Beetroot, carrots and seed potatoes can be planted in all areas. • Where frost is still likely, it’s way too early to start warm-season crops like tomato. Instead sow broad beans, broccoli, spinach, swedes and rocket. • As new shoots sprout, weed seedlings also awake from hibernation.
