Sunflowers grabbed the world’s hearts when the people of Ukraine made them a symbol of resistance against the Russian invasion of their country. Sunflowers bring height and colour to the garden in summer and are a fun plant for children to grow. They can be used to shelter a vegetable garden or provide fast (but temporary) screening. Tall varieties such ‘Giant Russian’ easily reach 3m in height and, massed together, form a substantial living screen. The flower itself is interesting. Like all daisy types, it’s a flower head, not a single flower. Its large, yellow, poll-enfilled centre is made up of thousands of tiny individual flowers packed together and ringed with petals.
