The Yarra River rises in the ranges northeast of Melbourne before it reaches the flatlands then winds through the CBD like a brown snake on its long journey to Port Phillip Bay.
The rolling hills of the Yarra Valley are home to more than 80 wineries and numerous picturesque small towns such as Lilydale, the gateway to the Dandenong Ranges.
That’s where, over the past 27 years, Lisa Leckie and her recently retired husband Glen raised four daughters on a six-acre property, two-thirds of it garden and the rest paddocks dotted with gumtrees.
Lisa has always loved gardening but this block presented some challenges: it was quite steep in parts and overgrown with gorse. The clay ground had to be heavily mulched to turn it into workable soil.
