True peanuts develop underground but there’s a tree that has peanut-butter-scented fruit on its branches. Aptly named the peanut butter tree, in summer and autumn it produces red berries that are a delicious snack straight off the tree — but don’t expect a peanut butter taste. The fruit is sweet but the flavour has been likened to sweet potato and dried fig. Unlike a true peanut, which produces an annual crop, peanut butter trees can take two to three years or longer to mature and start to flower and fruit, especially in cold climates. Once it’s ready, it flowers profusely in spring with clusters of small, bright yellow flowers. The flowers are self-fertile and can crop heavily even with just one tree in the garden.
