Perilla is an Asian herbaceous plant, an aromatic leafy vegetable native to mountainous areas from India to China, but cultivated and consumed mainly in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. A member of the mint family, it has both culinary and medicinal purposes. There are many varieties but the red- and green-leafed varieties are the most common. According to the ancient Chinese classics, Perilla frutescens was used to treat fish and crab poisoning. In Asia, strongly aromatic substances were often taken to combat mood disorders and mental stress; as such, perilla was a traditional treatment for depression, panic attacks and conditions such as asthma.
