With incubator sales soaring, it may seem like the broody hen has been replaced by technology. It’s tempting to buy a small incubator and set it up so the family can follow the evolving embryos then watch the chicks hatch. But little chicks need brooding for 5–6 weeks and family interest can wane, especially when the brooder gets smelly. A family venture can turn into Mum’s responsibility and take up lots of time. If your fowls exhibit broodiness, why not choose a mature hen and take advantage of her many skills? You can trust her to get temperature and humidity right and then save you money and time rearing the hatchlings.
