As every gardener knows, composting is a great way to recycle garden waste and return its nutrients to the soil. Traditional composting methods work well with soft green plant matter, twigs and thin branches that can be chopped quite finely to speed up their breakdown. What can we do with thick tree branches and large tree trunks, which don’t decompose readily? For hundreds of years, long before petrol-powered chainsaws and mulchers were invented, farmers have been using a clever method known as hügelkultur to compost fallen trees, without needing to chop them into really small pieces.
