WHEN DECIDUOUS TREES LEAF UP AGAIN IN SPRING, LOW-GROWING HOSTAS ARE HAPPY TO INHABIT THE SHADOWS

AS WELL AS UNDER TREES OR IN SHADED AREAS SUCH AS COURTYARDS, HOSTAS GROW WELL IN CONTAINERS AND CAN BE DISPLAYED IN SHADE HOUSES AND GLASSHOUSES. A cool shady spot is lovely to escape to as the days warm up but, for the gardener who wants to grow sun-loving flowers and vegetables, that shady spot can be a real challenge. One interesting type of shade is found under the canopy of deciduous trees. For the next few weeks, before deciduous trees re-leaf, summer-shaded gardens beds are still bathed in spring sunshine. Winter- and early-spring-flowering plants are the beneficiaries of these seasonal rays. It’s the ideal place to grow traditional woodland plants such as primroses and snowdrops.
