Celery is eaten all over the world and has been since antiquity. Unlike other ancient crops such as grapes and olives, the fibrous plant isn’t exactly a star but a plain food often used to bulk up soups and stews.
It originated in the Mediterranean and the first known use of its name is in Linear B script, an early form of Greek, dated around 35 centuries ago. It’s also mentioned in the works of Homer.
