Celery is eaten all over the world and has been since antiquity. Unlike other ancient crops such as grapes and olives, the fibrous plant isn’t exactly a star but a plain food often used to bulk up soups and stews. It originated in the Mediterranean and the first known use of its name is in Linear B script, an early form of Greek, dated around 35 centuries ago. It’s also mentioned in the works of Homer. When archaeologists opened the tomb of Tutankhamun, who died in 1323 BCE, they found a wreath made from various plants including celery. The Greeks and Romans wove wild celery into victory crowns for athletes. They, the Egyptians and the Chinese had many medicinal uses for celery, from hangover cure to aphrodisiac.
