COOL & TEMPERATE VEGIES • Right now is probably as hot as it’s going to get, so say hello to lettuce, spinach and silverbeet. As nights get cooler towards the end of the month, Asian greens, broccoli, leeks and spring onions can go in, but don’t even consider garlic till things really cool down.• In temperate zones, add bush beans, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and celery to the list. Lettuce is good to go as long as you shelter sensitive seedlings from what’s left of the summer sun.• Best hold off on herbs for now — though, having said that, you could always try basil, parsley and some tough-as-old-boots lemongrass.• While it’s hot, dry or windy, edibles need daily watering; leafy crops may bolt to flower and seed if they dry out.
