IT’S MIDSUMMER ALREADY BUT THERE’S STILL TIME TO HAVE THAT LAST DANCE WITH A LATE SECOND CROP

Summer is a wonderful time in the vegie patch, with a bounty of produce available, so every meal features something picked fresh from the garden. There’s lots to harvest and eat or preserve at this time of the year, but don’t let this time of plenty end abruptly as plants reach the end of their lifecycles. You still have time to grow a second crop of your favourite summer vegetables to harvest in autumn before the cold weather returns. In midsummer, you can plant root crops such as potatoes, turnips and beetroot and fruiting crops including zucchini, tomato, beans and cucumber, all for autumn harvest. In most areas, it’s safe to plant leafy crops including lettuce, silverbeet and basil while in warm zones it’s also possible to grow a late crop of sweet corn…
