Aplentiful pumpkin harvest in late autumn is the result of spring and early summer planting — so now’s your last chance to plant this season. That is of course unless you’re in the tropics, where pumpkins are typically grown from February to September. With its earthy sweetness and adaptable nature, the pumpkin is a staple ingredient in cuisines around the world. It features heavily in autumn and winter dishes such as stews, soups and hearty casseroles and is also popular in sweet desserts like pumpkin pie. If you’re keen to stockpile your pumpkin harvest for a long time, look for thick-skinned varieties that keep well when stored in the right way.
