WHO IS GREENING OUR WORLD AND HOW THEY ARE DOING IT

CITIZEN SCIENTISTS BUILD PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE The knowledge bank of science is built on the work of dedicated amateurs and the national biodiversity database Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) claims around half of its species records came from citizen scientists. This public contribution comprises 62 million out of a total of 125 million species records in the ALA, which is hosted by the CSIRO and funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). In the past year alone, said ALA Citizen Science Lead Dr Erin Roger, members of the public contributed “more than 9.6 million new species occurrence records”. Citizen data comprise the majority of records for species, she said — for example, 63 per cent in the case of the black rock-cod (Epinephelus daemelii).
