MEETING THE THREAT TO GREATER GLIDERS Greater gliders (Petauroides volans) might just be the cutest Aussie marsupial you’ve never seen — or even heard of. Once abundant in eucalypt forests along the east coast from Queensland to Victoria, gliders were uplisted from vulnerable to endangered in 2022. Up to 80 per cent of the greater glider total population has disappeared due to destruction of old-growth forests, the devastating impacts of the Black Summer bushfires and ongoing land clearing. A distant relative of the koala and ringtail possum, the greater glider is Australia’s largest gliding mammal. It has delightfully large furry ears and a long prehensile tail.
