For most Australian gardeners, the common name gumtree immediately brings eucalyptus to mind — but for botanists there’s more to the story. As well as eucalypts, the gumtree group also includes Angophora (think Sydney red gum, A. costata) and my personal favourite, Corymbia, also known as bloodwood. Let’s focus on the beautiful bloodwoods, as they provide some of the best gumtrees for Australian gardens. Corymbia is a genus of more than 100 species of trees and some mallees (multi-stemmed shrubs) in the Myrtaceae family. Formerly included in Eucalyptus, the genus was separated based on differences in fruit, leaf, and floral morphology.
