Cosmos are annual meadow flowers from the hot dry plains of North, Central and South America and are well suited to Australian gardens. They are a great choice for a beginner gardener or for children to grow as they are easy to raise from seed and produce masses of flowers. These tall, slender plants produce flowers from late spring to autumn and have attractive ferny green leaves. With heads of daisy-like flowers in white and tones of pink as well as orange, they are ideal as cut flowers. Picking a bunch for a vase simply encourages more blooms. As well as adding height and colour to the garden, cosmos can be planted among the vegies to attract pollinating insects including honeybees, native bees and butterflies.
